The study was aimed to understand the general management practices for efficient use of animal power and to identify major constraints related to animal power in some woredas of east and west Wellega Zones. The districts were purposively selected to represent all the agro-ecology (the highland, mid altitude and lowland). A total of 190 farmers who have at least half hector cropland were selected purposively and important information was gathered through questionnaire prepared for this purpose. It was found that shortage of draft oxen is one of the major constraints to crop production. This is more aggravated by shortage of feeds, lack of adequate health services, lack of improved farm implements and water shortage during dry season. So it can be concluded that the use of equines as source of draught power should maximized and emphasis should be given in training on draft oxen management and efficient use of equines. Also providing oxen with required quantity and quality feed, provision of adequate health services and preparation and demonstration of suitable farm implements are suggested.
