Regeneration status of moist montane forests of Southwest Ethiopia

The species composition and density of seedlings and saplings of nine southwestern moist afromontane forests (Bonga, Boginda, Masha-anderacha, Sheko, Yayu, Sigmo, Setema, Belete-Gera and Godere) were studied. A systematic transect line sampling technique was employed to assess the regeneration with a sampling size of 40 square m quadrats on each 50 m altitudinal drop. The result of the regeneration density varies from the least 4879 ha (sup -1) in Masha-Anderacha to the highest 13207 ha (sup -1) Boginda. The representation of species in the form of regeneration varies too. Among prioritized species, more that 50% of the species have no regeneration. Though the species Hagenia abyssinica and Afrocarpus falcatus exhibit both saplings and seedlings in limited numbers, they are represented only in one forest each (Bonga and Setema respectively). In general, the result shows that the natural regeneration in the studied forests is not sufficient to re-establish the stands and there should be some management intervention. Conservation of forest genetic resources requires complete understanding of the material to be conserved, therefore, research on the biology, ecology, socio-economic and other relevant areas of forest resources are also essential.
