Toxicities of new insecticides having novel modes of action along with conventional insecticides were evaluated during 2003 against second-instar (5-day-old) larvae of American bollworm [Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner)] by 'Potter's tower spray method. Based on the median lethal concentration values, the new molecules, viz emamectin benzoate, indoxacarb, abamectin and spinosad, were highly toxic to the test insect. The descending order of toxicity of insecticides was emamectin benzoate 5SG indoxacarb 15EC abamectin 1.8 EC spinosad 48EC bifenthrin 10 EC quinolphos 25EC cypermethrin 10EC endosulfan 35EC deltamethrin 2.8EC fenvalerate 20EC betacyfluthrin 2.5 sc. Since farmers now have a number of alternatives in the form of new and old insecticides, the best strategy would be to use all the effective new compounds in rotation at appropriate time along with other pest management tactics.
