Maduramicin toxicity in broilers and its amelioration by antioxidants - a pathological study.

The Objective of present work was to study the effect of maduramicin @ 8 ppm on various organs and to evaluate the efficacy of antioxidants ginseng and _-cartene to conteract the oxidative damage. Supplementation of maduramicin resulted in congestion of intestines, enlargement and yellowish discolouration of liver, subcranial haemorrhages and haemorrhages in heart, kidneys, thigh and abdominal muscles. The histological changes revealed varying degrees of congestion and haemorrhages in various organs while infiltration with lymphoid aggregates was observed in heart, liver and kidneys. The other changes were fragmentation and sarcolysis of cardiac and skeletal muscle fibers, hyperplasia of biliary epithelium, degenerative changes in hepatic cells and tubular epithelium, cystic changes and areas of depletion in bursal follicles. Brain showed thickning of vessels with obliteration of lumen. Staining with Van Gieson's stain revealed proliferation of endothelium with vacuolation and thickening due to fibroblastic proliferation. Absence of gross lesions with mild hitological changes in various organs of group IV and VI with regenerative changes in liver, spleen and bursa of Fabricius indicated the efficacy of antioxidants to present the damage caused by maduramicin.
