A field experiment was conducted during winter season of 1999-2000 at Agricultural Research Farm of Palli Siksha Bhavana, Visva-Bharati to study the "effect of mulching and nitrogen on forage yield of oats in rice fallow" in red and lateritie soil of West Bengal. Mulching with different levels of nitrogen application significantly influenced the growth attributes and herbage yield in oats fodder. Among the mulching treatments, straw mulch performed significantly better than were mulch system with respect to plant height, leaves/plant, tillers/plant, leaf area indices, dry matter accumulation and herbage yield of oats. Nitrogen application @ 60 kg/ha produced significantly higher green and dry forage yields of oats than 40 kg nitrogen. Mulching and levels of nitrogen interacted significantly where straw mulching combined with 60 kig nitrogen/ha performed better than any other combinations.
