Cytotaxonomic studies of Chenopodiaceae family in East Azarbaijan

Chenopodiaceae family in East Azarbaijan has 31 genera and 75 species. In this investigation, 70 populations from 21 genera and 36 species were studied. Seeds and plant material were collected from the nature. Seeds were germinated in petridishes and their root tips were used for cytological studies. The samples were prepared by Hematoxylin staining and advanced method of squash (Agayeves method). Then, permenent slides were prepared from these samples. Photographs were afterword, taken from these slides by monitoring systems and in computer and also by Willd or Olympus microscopes. Karyotypes and chromosome lengths were determined by Addobe photoshope ver.6 and micromeasure software, respectively. The cintromery indices were arranged by the Excell program and the data were analysed by SPSS software. Idiogram was drawed by Excel. Results showed that the basic Chromosome number of all genera, except spinacia and Camphorosma (with X=6) is X=9. In Atriplex aucheri, A. micrantha, Krascheninnikovia ceratoides, Kochia prostrata Polyploidy complex was observed. The Chromosome number of Agriophyllum lateriflorum, Anabasis aphylla, Anthochlamys polygaloides, Bienertia cycloptera, Gamanthus pilosus, Halanthium rarifolium, Halothomnu auriculus, H. glaucus, Noaea mucronata, Salsola ericoides, S. crassa, S. gemmascens, S. persica, Petrosimonia brachiata based on the litreture and Chromosome indices is reported for the first time.Except for some genera for example Atriplex, Chenopodium, Salsola. Eurotia, Kochia, Halocnemum, Haloxylon, others are Considered as first reports from Iran. Polyploidy levels and chromosome number in Chenopodiaceae family varied between diploid (2n=18, 2n=12), tetraploid (2n=36, 2n=24) and hexaploid (2n=54) and many of them have symmetrical and primary karyotype.
