A field experiment was carried out in Fars Agricultural Research Center – Zarghan to determine the effect of three planting dates and twelve planting patterns in yield and yield components of spring safflower ( Carthamus tinctorius L. ) ( line L. S. P. selected from Poshtkooh mass). The experiment was conducted as a split plot factorial design with four replications in 2002- 2003 cropping year. The treatments were planting dates (March 19, April and May 22) in main plots, and rows distance (30, 40 and 50cm), and plant distance in row (2.5, 5, 10 and 15cm) in subplots. Necessary notes including plant height, height of primary branch, number of branches per plant, stem diameter, number of heads per plant and number of seeds per head were recorded during plant growth. Seed yield and 1000- Seed weight were determined after harvesting. Results showed that the highest seed yield ( 2534.5 kg/ha) was obtained from the first planting date with 30 cm row distance and 15cm plant distance in row. Seed yield and yield components were significantly affected by planting dates. Row distances had significant influence on seed yield and yield components except number of seeds per head and 1000- seed weight. Plant distance on row had not any influence on plant height, number of seeds per head and 1000- seed weight, but it significantly affected by height of primary branch, number of branches per plant, number of heads per plant ad stem diameter. The interaction between plant distance on row and the row distance with planting date was significant for seed yield and yield components. The interaction between row distance with plant distance on row was also significant except for number of seeds per head. Agronomic traits showed that seed yield had high positive correlation with height, height of primary branch, number of seed per head and 1000- seed weight, and it had negative correlation with number of branches per plant and number of heads per planthowever, it was not significant.
