The study on the efficiency of four types of plastic films (PET, PVC, PA/ PP and LDPE/PA/LDPE) for packaging raw Pistachio.

At now, ordinary plastic bag use for raw pistachio export. This type of packaging is only for facility of transportation and can not be a suitable packaging material for this valuable product. Using plastic films is one of the suitable methods for pistachio packaging and prevents pistachio moisture absorption. Because when moisture of the pistachio is more than 7 %, there is possibility of fungi growth and production of mycotoxins specially aflatoxin and at a result health hazard. This project was carried out in order to determine efficiency (in permeable moisture point of view) of 4 types of plastic films including PET, PVC, PA/ PP and LDPE/PA/LDPE (200 micron thickness) in comparison with ordinary plastic films in air filled condition and 22-25¢ھC and 85-100% relative humidity. Moisture and aflatoxin was measured in pistachio samples by using oven and HPLC method and moisture at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 months after packaging. Data were analyzed in complex completely randomized design. Results show acceptable time for storing pistachio in LDPE/PA/LDPE, PA/PP and PVC was about 2 month and in PET was 4 month. Altogether, PET and PA/PP packaging contained less contamination, more shelf life and less plastic film preparation cost. Between them, PET is cheaper and suggests using for pistachio packaging.
