Evaluation of levels of PLRV and PVY infections of seed potato tubers grown in different provinces

Potato crop becomes infected by various diseases and pests, They may reduce quality and quantity of seed tubers. These infecting agents can spread by air and soil and mainly through infected seed tubers. Some of these agents can simultaneously spread by various means. Across seed tuber producing regions, pest and disease control was the prerequisite for production of high quality seed potato yield. This research program aimed to evaluate the infection levels of imported minituber to PVY and PLRV in various cultivars across different potato producing provinces. In year daughter seed tubers (G) selected from field planted by imported minitubers from Agria, Atlantic, Diamond, Granola, Concord and Shepodi cultivars. Tuber samples were taken from fields grown under different field managements in various provinces. Concentration of PVY and PLRV content was Probbed using DAS-ELISA test on collected sample tubers (G). Antibodies and positive control virouses were provided by Neogen-Europe Ltd. DAS-ELISA testing guide line followed the protocol provided by this Company. PVY infections were prevailed and more intense among different potato producing provinces. In respct to PVY infections, the healthiest seed tubers from imported minitubers from Agria, Shepodi, Marfona and Concord were produced in Tehran province (Firozkoh). Similarly, first generation of tubers of Agria, Concord and Granola cultivars scored the most healthy tubers regarding PVY virus. In addition, in this province, Concord and Marfona progenies were moderately affected by PVY virus. However, first generation of tubers of Agria, Kenebec and Marfona grown in Ardabil province showed the highest level of infections to PVY virus. This high infection level was related to medium level of controlling vectors activities under the growing agricultural conditions of first generation of tubers compared to previous provinces. However, level of infection varied among different fields. Marfona and Concord were responded differently to the different agronomical practices exercised in Kordestan, Hamandan and Tehran provinces. Ecological conditions of potato producing provinces should be taken into account when making final conclusions on factor effecting intensity and scope of spread of PVY virus. For example Concord, Shepody and Granola were produced healthier in governmental or semi-governmental field in respect to PVY infection. Since various cultivars responded differently to the level of virus infections, genetic make-ups of these cultivars must have been different tolerant genes.
