Study of the role of common weeds in survival of cotton verticillium wilt disease

According to the results of previous studies, commom weeds grown in cotton fields can serve as host and vector of Verticillium dahliae the causal agent of cotton wilt disease and play important roles in survival and transmission of the disease. In this study, common weeds of cotton fields in Moghan and Neishabour area and their roles in survival and transmission of cotton verticillium wilt disease during 2002-2004 cropping seasons were investigated. The design of the experiment was randomized complete blocks with ten treatments (No. of weeds) and four replications (No. of cotton fields). Population of V. dahliae in the roots of weeds and the sorounding soil was determined every year and were compared in different treatments. The average population of fungus in one g of field soil and the disease index were also evaluated in different fields in each experimental site. Results indicated that the fungal population was variable depending on different weed, experimental site and the year of experiment. In general, Amaranthus retroflexus ،Solanum nigrum, Xanthium spinosum and Portulaca oleraceea showed the most fungal population in their roots and sorrounding soil. Average fungal population in g field soil in different fields was not significantly different but disease index in Moghan cotton fields in all three years was much higher than Neishabour fields.
