Investigation of the effect of yellow rust infection at different wheat growth stages of various wheat cultivars in the country.

Yellow rust caused by Puccinia striiformis, is one of the most important diseases of wheat in the world. Determining of the losses caused by yellow rust regarding to the infection time during wheat growth stages is very critical to find the best method for controlling the disease. The present study was carried out in different provinces of the country including Fars, Kermanshah, Khozestan, Mazandaran and Semnan under artificial inoculation. The experimental design was cnducted as split plot with 8 main plots (different infection times) and 3 sub-plots (susceptible, resistant and commercial cultivars) with 3 replications. Mixture of Talk powder and yellow rust spores were used for inoculation of wheat plants. To provide favorable condition for disease development, Mist and furrow irrigation were used. Mancozeb fungicide was used to protect the plant aginst the disease in the cases as well as necessury. Yellow rust infection at booting stage, and seed yield was applied to evaluate the experiment. The results indicated that there is a significant differences (P،ـ 1 and P،ـ 5) among the treatments on Coeffecient of Infection and grain yield. The mean comparison of main plot, sub-plots and their interactionsons showed that there are the most amount of Coeffecient of Iinfection and the least amount of grain yield, when the plots were inoculated at all 3 stages of seedlinf, tillering and flag leaf or at flag leaf stage alone, special in susceptible cultivars. So planting the resistant or tolerant cultivars, and spray with the recomended fungicide (s) in epidemic years at flag leaf stage can reduce the disease severity and yield losses.
