An in Vitro survey of the antibacterial activity of Iranian different regions honey.

To assay the antibacterial activity of Iranian honeys, a study was done on 78 specimens collected from different parts of the country (15 provinces, 38 districts) with the cooperation of the National Animal Husbandry Research Institute. Different species of Astragallus, thyme the thistle consisted one of the floral ources of about 70%, 30% and 25% of the honeys respectively. Citrus, Tamarix, Ferula gumosa, Eucalyptus, Lotus, Helianthus and Alfalfa honeys were considered monofloral. The antibacterial activity of the honeys was assayed against staphylococcus aureus by the agar well diffusion method with phenol solutions as standard. The mean total and non-peroxide antibacterial activity of the honeys were measured to be 2.28 and 0.97 phenol percent with standard deviations of 1.18 and 0.17 phenol percent respectively.Regarding the districts, the honeys of Babol (Diospyrus lotus), Bijar (Astragallus, thyme and Onobrychis), Urmieh (Astragallus), Ghorveh (Onobrychis. Astragallus and thistle), Takab (Astragallus, thyme and Teucrium polium), Sarab (Astragallus and Trifolium), Divandareh (thistle) and Bojnurd (Onobruchis, thistle and Acantholimon) had the highest activity respectively. The honeys of divandareh, Urmieh, Takab and Kan had the highest non-peroxide activity respectively. Among manofloral honeys, Citrus, Tamarix, Ecualyptus and Helianthus did not have measurable antibacterial activity. Ferula gumosa, Alfalfa and lotus spevimens had modest antibacterial activity. The honey samples were grouped and numbered according to color. Analysis with pearson correlation showed that in darker honeys the non-peroxide activity is higher and the peroxide activity lower. This analysis also showed that the honey darkens with increasing age.
