Charging performance of an electrostatic pesticide spraying system for low-concentration and high-volume applications

The objective of this research was to develop an electrostatic pesticide spraying system that had a high deposit ratio for low-concentration and high-volume application. A system which had an outer annular induction charging electrode around a high flow-rate hydraulic nozzle was designed and its charging characteristics were investigated. When the applied voltage on the electrode was gradually increased up to +4kV, the charge to mass ratio (CMR) of spray droplets increased without occurrence of discharge and electric leakage from the electrode. As the gap between the spray cone and the electrode was shortened, the CMR increased. On the other hand, the CMR decreased while nozzle flow rate was increased. The CMR obtained by this system was -0.20 - -0.45 mC/kg with high flow-rate hollow corn nozzle of 0.56-2.6 L/min.
