A user manual for Windows software designed to analyze densities of soil microorganisms by the most-probable-number method

In measurements of microorganism density in the environment and in soils, the 'most probable number' (MPN) method is widely applied. However, since MPN values are presented in the form of tables based on a limited number of dilution rates and replications, there are many restrictions on the design of experiments that use the MPN method, or that calculate MPN values and use them in statistical analysis. We developed a program that calculates MPN values and runs on personal computers that use the Microsoft Windows XP or Vista operating system. This program can calculate MPN values with a higher number of degrees of freedom based on a number of replications and a range of dilutions. In addition, the software can test the significance of differences between MPN values. This paper provides a user manual for each of the program's four modules, which are written as macros that run in Microsoft Excel 2000, 2003, 2007. This program can be obtained from the Intellectual Property Center in the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization.
