The effect of addition of dried agar waste to layer diet on iodine content of egg yolk and egg quality

There are many factories making agar (kanten) from red seaweed around and in the Yamaoka district of Gifu Prefecture. The waste from them (agar waste) is required to be recycled. These experiments were designed to evaluate the effect of the addition of dried agar waste to layer diets on iodine content of egg yolk and egg quality. Forty laying hens were used for feeding trial for a 42-d period. Treatments were : basal diet (BD, a commercial diet for laying hens), 5% agar waste-added BD, 10% agar waste-added BD and potassium iodine (KI)-added BD. Iodine content of KI-added BD was adjusted to that of 10% agar waste-added BD. Feed intake was greater in hens fed diets containing agar waste or KI than those fed BD (P0.01). Egg production ratio remained unchanged between these treatments. Iodine content of egg yolk was higher for agar waste- or KI-added diets than BD diet, by about 5, 7, and 12 times in 5% agar waste-added BD, 10% agar waste-added BD and KI-added BD, respectively. These treatments had little or no effect on egg weight, Haugh unit, Roche color fan score, egg shape index and egg shell thickness. These results suggested that the agar waste from red seaweed can be used to produce value-added eggs, iodine-enriched eggs.
