Vegetation analyses based on GIS for wildlife protection area in Hokkaido [Japan]

Vegetation and altitude analyses based on GIS were conducted for wildlife protection area (WPA) in Hokkaido. WPA covered 10% area in lowland (below 100m sea levels), 7% area in middle altitude area (101-1,000m sea levels) and 22% area in upland (above 1,001m sea levels). Most marshland and open water area (40-46%) in lowland and alpine vegetation (69%) in upland were designated as WPA. Nine WPA were registered as Ramsar wetland and whole area of Daisetsuzan WPA was overlapped in Daisetsuzan National Park (one of mountainous National Park). In Hokkaido, conservation plan on wetland and mountainous area were improved and this might be one of the results to designate WPA in wetland and mountainous area. WPA covered only 8-13% woodland in middle altitude area. Woodland is one of major vegetation in Hokkaido, but this study clarify that only few woodlands were designated as WPA especially in middle altitude area.
