Development of Chosonze and Nojichosa (agriculture and village surveys) in San-in, Shimane prefecture [Japan]

This paper aims to make clear the historical characteristics of Chosonze and Nojichosa (agriculture and village surveys) in San-in, Shimane prefecture at the beginning of twentieth century. In this time it was nation widely surveyed the actual condition of village and farmer economy by Nokai (agriculture association). It was called 'Chosonze' or Nojichosahokokusyo in Shimane Prefecture, and practiced as the local improvement movement. In this paper it is especially analyzed about the relationship and development of village and farmer surveys in nation and Shimane prefecture. In Shimane prefecture it was actively, widely and long planned and practiced its survey by Shimane Ken and Choson Nokai (agriculture association in prefecture, village and hamlet). And the local communities self independently performed and managed for own's promotion.
