Pathological aspects of the pancreas parasitized by flukes (Eurytrema spp.) in calves

A pathological investigation was carried out on the pancreas parasitized by flukes (Eurytrema spp.) in 3 calves. Main lesions were dilatation of the lumen and thickening of the wall with hyperplasia of connective tissue at the affected ducts. This was associated with atrophy of the periductal exocrine parenchyma and hyperplasia of the interlobular connective tissue with cell infiltrations. Inflammatory reactions were also seen in the affected sites, such as proliferation of the glands of the mucosa, increase of the goblet cells, cell infiltrations to the propria mucosa layer of the pancreatic ducts and an activation of the periductal lymph nodules. Although these lesions were observed in previous reports on mature animals, intraductal granulation, the nodules of eggs in the wall and surrounding tissue of the affected ducts, and cirrhotic changes due to the extensive parenchymal loss and subsequent fibrosis were not seen. In general, the degree of the pathological changes in the present study appeared to be mild. Collected flukes were mostly immature when evaluated by the body size and the gonadal development of the flukes together with estimated period after infection of the animals. Therefore, the lesions of the parasitized pancreas in calves were considered to be in the first stage induced by the initial infection of the larva and the young adult worm.
