Attaching and effacing Escherichia coli (AEEC) natural infection in 122-day pet chickens exhibiting depression and debility were found in Tochigi Prefecture in January 2008. Histologically, numerous gram-negative bacilli covered the surface of the enterocytes of the jejunum, ileum and cecum (distal portion). Transmission electron microscopy revealed numerous bacilli attached to superficial membranes of enterocytes but no microvilli. E. coli (O103 : UT) were isolated from feces. The eaeA gene was detected by polymerase chain reaction in the E. coli. The E. coli did not produce heat-labile or heat-stable enterotoxin, verotoxin (VT-1, VT-2).In addition to having AEEC infection, the pet chickens were diagnosed as having coccidiosis and cryptosporidiosis.
