Profiles of serum markers for calcium and bone metabolism in hypocalcemia induced by EDTA infusion in sheep

The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal markers for calcium (Ca) and bone metabolism in sheep with experimental hypocalcemia induced by EDTA infusion. A 6% EDTA solution was infused intravenously into five sheep over 30 minutes. Serum levels of Ca were determined, as well as 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin Dsub(3) (1,25(OH)2Dsub(3)), bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP), osteocalcin (OC) and crosslinked carboxyterminal telopeptide (I CTP) as markers for Ca and bone metabolism. Serum concentrations of Ca decreased dramatically during EDTA infusion (P0.01) and returned gradually to normal levels over 5.5 hours. Serum concentrations of 1,25(OH)2Dsub(3) increased gradually for 60 minutes and were markedly increased at 90 minutes (P0.01) after EDTA infusion. BAP activity in serum was decreased at the end of EDTA infusion (P0.05). Serum profiles of OC, I CTP was unclear. These results suggest that 1,25(OH)2Dsub(3) and BAP are quick and precise makers for Ca and bone metabolism in hypocalcemic ruminants.
