Effects of Fusarium head blight infection time on wheat yield and deoxynivalenol concentration in grains

In 2002, provisional guidelines for the content of deoxynivalenol (DON), a mycotoxin produced in Fusarium head blight (FHB), was established at 1.1 ppm. Since then, there has been demand for a control measure against the disease to reduce DON pollution. Against this background, we examined the effects of Fusarium graminearum infection time on DON concentration in grains and grain weight per head in Fukusayaka and Nohrin 61, main wheat cultivars in Shiga Prefecture. 1) In both Fukusayaka and Nohrin 61, pathologic signs of FHB were observed in stands after F. graminearum was inoculated at the time of heading to 25 days later. 2) DON production (0.2 ppm) was observed after F. graminearum was inoculated at the time of heading to 40 days later for Nohrin 61, and at the time of heading to 35 days later for Fukusayaka. This suggests that DON pollution may occur as a result of F. graminearum infection at the time of heading to the middle period of grain filling, when the disease does not observed in stands. 3) The DON concentration was higher in Fukusayaka than in Nohrin 61, tending to increase when infection occurred in the first half of the blooming period for Nohrin 61, and in the last half for Fukusayaka. 4) Grain weight per head decreased because of F. graminearum infection during the blooming period.
