Characterization of Newcastle disease virus isolated from racing pigeon

At a dovecot, two- to four-month-old racing pigeons suffered watery diarrhea and vomiting after introduction of pigeons from another dovecot; six pigeons died and 14 were slaughtered in Niigata Prefecture, Japan, in July 2007. A Newcastle disease virus (NDV) was isolated from three out of the four pigeons examined. The isolate was classified by nucleotide sequencing of the F gene as genotype VI, to which domestic NDV isolated from pigeons belongs. The deduced amino acid sequence of the F protein cleavage site has four basic amino acids consisting of lysine and arginine, indicating velogenic strains. In the pathogenicity tests, however, NDV isolate appeared lentogenic in the chicken inoculation and mesogenic to velogenic in the cell inoculation. These results proved that NDV isolate was lentogenic to mesogenic. We guessed that the pigeons had been infected from silent infected pigeons introduced from the other dovecot. An appropriate vaccination of pigeons seemed to be necessary to prevent an ND outbreak in the dovecot and to prevent infection of the poultry farm.
