'Kouiku No.1', a novel cultivar of glory lily (Gloriosa superba L.) with reddish-orange flowers

A novel cultivar of glory lily 'Kouiku No. 1', with reddish-orange flowers, was released in 2004 by Kochi Agricultural Research Centre. The cultivar shows the following characteristics: 1. The length of the stem is shorter than those of 'Rose Queen' and 'Misato Red'. The number of leaves is almost the same as that of 'Rose Queen'. 2. The perianth segments are bicolored; reddish-orange on the upper side and bright greenish-yellow on the lower side. The reddish-orange on the upper side is wedge shaped. 3. The flower shape is semispherical. The perianth segments are strongly reversed. The flower size (height and diameter of each flower) is smaller than those of 'Rose Queen' and 'Misato Red'. 4. The number of days to flowering was almost the same as for 'Rose Queen' and 'Misato Red', after planting tubers that have been induced to sprout at ca. 30degC and grown under the same conditions.
