Irrigation management at growth stages for the greenhouse muskmelon in root zone restriction culture using polyester sheeting

Methods of irrigation management, based upon evapotranspiration rate, for the greenhouse muskmelon under root zone restriction culture using polyester sheeting were investigated. The effects of the amount of irrigation at different growth stages on fruit enlargement and quality were examined. The following results were obtained. 1. For winter cropping, irrigation during the vegetative growth stage or the fruit enlargement stage was set at 5% more than the evapotranspiration rate, and for all other periods it was set at 15% less. The fruit weight was enhanced, reaching 1.4kg. Soluble solids content of the inner wall was 16%. 2. When, for winter cropping, the amount of irrigation for the vegetative growth stage and the fruit enlargement stage were set at 5% more than the evapotranspiration rate and all other periods were set at 15% less than the evapotranspiration rate, high quality fruit was produced; fruit weight was enhanced, reaching more than 1.7kg. Soluble solids content of the inner wall was more than 15%. 3. On the other hand, when, for spring cropping, irrigation for in all other growth stages was set at 15% less than the evapotranspiration rate, high quality fruit was produced; with fruit weights of 1.7 kg and soluble solids content of the inner wall of 16%. In addition, when the amount of irrigation in the vegetative growth stage and the fruit enlargement stage were set at 5% more than the evapotranspiration rate, fruit weight was further enhanced: reaching more than 1.9kg. Soluble solids content of the inner wall was more than 16%.
