The effects of sodium oleate, a component of soap, on the major fungi found in bathrooms

We examined the inhibitory effect of beauty soap with the component sodium oleate on the major fungi isolated from bathrooms by measuring the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Among the tested species, Trichoderma harzianum exhibited the highest susceptibility to sodium oleate (MIC, 1%). Aureobasidium pullulans (MIC, 4%) as well as Acremonium sp., Cladosporium cladosporioides, and Phoma pomorum (MIC, 2%) were also more susceptible to the sodium oleate than Aspergillus niger (MIC, 16%). Moreover, we found a growth inhibitory effect on the hypha of Cladosporium cladosporioides below the MIC. Based on these results, we conclude that beauty soap with sodium oleate has growth inhibitory effects on the major fungi isolated from bathrooms.
