Kojimoto, A.(Aoba Animal Hospital, Miyazaki (Japan))
The recent serological surveys show that the epidemics of rabbit encephalitozoonosis among the pet rabbit in Japan and overseas, and it has been attracted attention. It is one of the most crucial diseases in rabbit because it sometimes causes a fatal neurological disease. However, there are still a number of clinical problems such as the frequency of the latent infections, difficulties of antemortem definitive diagnosis, and luck of the duidelines for treatments. The most common clinical sign is the neurological ones as seen in a vestibular disease, and others are renal failure, and cataract or uveitis. The availabilities of the benzimidazoles have been indicated for the antimicrobial treatment. At the acute phase of a neurological disease, the anti-inflammatory therapy for the inflammatory reaction accompanied with microbial infection to the host cells is also important. Nevertheless, we should consider that some cases could show sub-clinical pathological changes or residual of pathogens after improvement of symptoms might occur, which indicate the possibilities to be the persistent of disease or microbial carriers.
