Effect of light intensity on growth and antioxdative activity of Raphanus sativus L. 'kaiwaredaikon'

Effect of light intensity on growth and antioxidative activity of Raphanus sativus L. 'kaiwaredaikon' was evaluated. Three different groups of kaiwaredaikon were grown for 5 days in growth chambers under three different light intensity levels (0, 20, 280 micro mol/square m/s, respectively). Under high intensity lighting, hypocotyl length became shorter than those grown under 0 micro mol/square m/s conditions. Fresh weight and water content per plant decreased as light intensity increased. Dry weight per plant did not change according to light intensity, whereas both DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity and total polyphenol concentration were significantly increased with light intensity. It was suggested that an increase in polyphenol concentration under high light intensity promoted the increase in DPPH radical scavenging activity.
