The trends of regional development in the capacity of the branch of science and in the capacity of the practical activity of public government and public administration are evaluated. The process of regional development in Latvia is characterized in above mentioned context. The stage nihilism towards planning, characteristic for transition from centralized planning economy to capitalism is overtaken. In order to success in sustainable development of Latvian regions the experience of EU in the areas of institutional management and financing of cohesion policy shall be applied.
