Design and fabrication of a handmade paper room dryer

A handmade paper room dryer was designed and fabricated to meet the industry's need for a relia ble and affordable drying facility. The dryer had the following features: a) dimension : 3m x 3m; b) walls and ceiling: 25-mm-thick wood wool cement boards; c) heating system: induced draft wood-fired furnace, heat exchanger and chimney, and, d) furnace: mild steel plate as outside wall, 100-mm, firebricks as inner walls. The room dryer could dry 330 sheets of 89 gsm handmade paper from 81 percent down to 10 percent moisture content (MC) in 3.7 hr at a temperature range of 23 to 63 deg C, and 330 sheets of 244 gsm paper from 70 percent down to 10 percent MC in 7 hr at 23 to 50 deg C. On the average, the room dryer could dry 990 sheets in 11 hr from 81 to 10 percent MC using a temperature range of 23 to 60 deg C for cards, printing and wrapping paper. Boards with 244 gsm could be dried from 70 percent to 10 percent MC at 23 to 50 deg C. Drying per square meter of paper cost USD 0.035 versus USD 0.104 using the LPG steam-heated, 3-rectangular-faced, stainless steel dryer. Savings worth USD 37.21 could be realized in drying 990 sheets.
