SRI [System of Rice Intensification] technology increases rice yield

The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is a potential technology that can increase rice yield from 2.2 t/ha to 8.8 t/ha. It entails unconventional cultivation practices especially in plant and water management. The essential features of SRI include immediate planting after uprooting; transplanting young seedlings one by one with wider spacing; improving soil aeration by avoiding continuously saturated soil condition during vegetative growth; early and frequent weeding; and using organic fertilizer. To prove the SRI technology, Bagas et al. (PAS-PREC Samar) evaluated the yield performance of PSB Rc 18 using SRI. The results and the economic profitability of the technology were compared with conventional rice production method. The study was conducted in Eastern Samar [Philippines] during the Nov 2005 to April 2006 wet season. Results showed that the use of SRI technology resulted higher yield of 42,500 kg/ha compared with the conventional rice production method of 37,400 kg/ha. SRI incurred higher production cost of Php 20,105 compared with the conventional practice of Php 19,620 because of greater number of man-days required in straight row planting. However, SRI gave higher ROI of 110% compared with 91% from the conventional practice. The higher the ROI was attributed to the higher yields obtained using the SRI technology. There is a need to replicate this trial in other locations in Samar across seasons to find out if the technology is feasible. Moreover, enhancement of this technology could increase rice production.
