Seed system: DA [Department of Agriculture, Quezon City, Philippines]-IPB partnership for sustainable seed supply for the farmers

The grant from the Department of Agriculture amounting to two million pesos (P2,000,000.00) was used as an augmentation fund to support the seed production activities of the Institute of Plant Breeding, Crop Science Cluster, UPLB-CA. Each project staff was allocated a certain amount of money depending on their programmed seed production activity. Portion of the grant was also utilized for the repair and maintenance of farm equipment. The seed production activities were conducted either in-house or through contract growing. During the period July 16, 2006-Dec 31, 2007, the project was able to produce seeds of corn (20,611.75 kgs), legumes (2,576.50 kgs) and vegetables (2,004.38 kgs) with the total value of P2,972,702.35. Production for vegetative planting materials are as follows: 41,000 stalks of cassava, 124,000 cuttings of sweet potato and 1,937 plantlets of banana. The total value for vegetative planting materials is P295,684.00. To enhance utilization of seeds of concerned crops (short season vegetables), support was given also in the production of 447 liters of SNAP nutrient solution. The gross income generated is P3,268,386.35. As of Dec 2007, the project has an ending seed inventory of 6,460.25 kgs with a value of P869,390.05. Bulk of the produced planting material was availed by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Agriculture Organization and Provincial government of Albay [Philippines]. The total value of seeds procured by the three agencies amounted to P1,149,830.00. The income generated through the effort will be used to procure more seeds. This assistance from DA-BAR resulted to additional quantity of quality seeds in the market at more affordable prices. The income for next round was also realized. This seed production project shows that government assistance, is strategically placed, could contribute in addressing our need to produce more food.
