Potential sweet potato varieties for herbage and storage root yield

Eight local and two check varieties of sweet potato significantly differed in their vine length, weight of marketable storage roots, total yield and computed yield per hectare. As for leaf scab incidence, Mila, Wagwag, Violet, Comiles, Miracle; Kalbo-oy, and Kumander were found to be resistant. The longest vines and the highest herbage yield were obtained from Kalbo-oy and Kumander. On the other hand, Tagalog produced the highest weight of marketable storage roots while PSBSP17 had the highest total yield per plot and hectare. With regard to acceptability of boiled sweet potato roots, Mila, Violet, Miracle and Kumander were the most preferred. During the harvest, invited farmers selected Kumander, Peke Negro, Miracle, Wagwag and Violet. The farmers' selection was based on the following characteristics: extremely spreading vines, attractive leaves (color and shape) dark pale violet flesh and long-oblong storage roots. In terms of herbage and storage root yield Kumander and Miracle are potential varieties for planting in Bontoc, Mountain Province. Peke Negro, PSBSP17, Tagalog, Wagwag and Violet could served as alternative varieties.
