Growth and fiber yield of tissue- cultured Spanish Red Pineapple grown on medium fortified with various levels of BAP [benzyl amino purine] and degrees of shading

A field experiment was conducted at Aklan State University to determine the growth and yield performance of tissue-cultured Spanish Red Pineapple (TC SRP) fortified with various levels of Benzylaminopurine (BAP) during the tissue culture stage and applied with various degrees of shading. The results of the study revealed that number of months from planting to maturity, number of months from flowering to maturity, plant height, number of leaves developed and number of harvestable leaves were significantly affected by the various levels of BAP fortification. In most of these growth characteristics, BAP fortification at 3 to 5 ppm level effected a promotive effect. However, fiber yield of TC SRP was not influenced by the levels of BAP fortification. On the other hand, growing TC SRP under various degress of shading did not show a profound effect on many of the growth characteristics and fiber yield of SP pineapple except on the number of leaves. Unshaded plants and those under the 50 percent shading comparably produced more harvestable leaves, which significantly differed from the plants in the 25 percent and 75 percent shading. A significant interaction effect between the levels of BAP fortification and degrees of shading was observed on the number of months from planting to maturity and number of harvestable leaves obtained per plant. The color of Bastos and Liniuan obtained from TC SRP were both described as moderately off-white. Bastos and Liniuan fibers obtained from TC SRP had a mean tensile strength of 35.44 kg-m/g and 29.71 kg-m/g, respectively. The economic analysis of producing pina fiber using TC SRP under 25 percent shading gave a net return of Php 1,776,270.60 with a corresponding ROWC of 115.33 percent. This shows that growing TC SRP is partially shaded field is economically viable.
