Satoyama is a Japanese word referring to traditional rural landscapes typically having a subsistence farm, village,a community-or family-managed forest and some grasslands. There is an intimate relationship between man and nature in the satoyama. Man knows that the satoyama is his home and life support system hence,he traditionally protects and sustains the satoyama. In the Philippines, three types of satoyama can be found,namely,1) satoyama associated with rice farms in northern Luzon, 2) satoyama associated with rice and other crops in southern Luzon and other parts of the country and 3) satoyama associated with corn fields in the Visayas and Mindanao. At present due to alarming increase in human population, problems like biodiversity loss and uncertainty of land tenure are common in satoyama landscapes. There is a need to consider people in environmental planning and to help them engage in active community endeavor to avoid such problems. Nurturing and sustaining the satoyama tradition can help conserve biodiversity and sustain environmental health.
