Pokkali-derived rice mutants with improved agronomic and grain quality traits

Seeds of Pokkali, a salt tolerant, tall and late maturing traditional rice variety from India were y-irradiated with 250 gy 60Co. The M1 and M2 populations, established in 2005 dry (DS) and wet season(WS) generated 59 plants with reduced height and maturity, which were grown plant to a row in 2006 DS, constituting M3 lines. Selections of 32 lines comprising the M4 population, were evaluated for field performance in 2006 WS, of which 18 lines were selected. The M5 and M6 lines were evaluated in 2007 DS and WS, respectively, under irrigated and rainfed conditions. Consolidated results identified 15 most improved mutant lines, which have shifted from spreading to intermediate and erect culm, with shorter plant height of 92-115 cm compared with 137-176 cm for Pokkali checks, and reduced maturity of 109-127 DAS, compared with 120-126 DAS for the checks. The mutants generated 15-28 productive tillers as compared with 7-17 for the checks. During WS, the mutants yielded 4.1-8.5 t/ha and 3.1-5.9 t/ha under irrigated and rainfed conditions, respectively. Pokkali checks had a yield of 1.6-4.9 t/ha and 0.7-3.8 t/ha, for irrigated and rainfed trial, respectively. Grain quality was also significantly improved in the mutants. A change from awned to awnless grains, a shift from intermediate to small and slender grains, and a change from red to white pericarp were observed in the mutants. The milling potentials of most mutants are within the standards, chalkiness reduced, amylose content between 17.5% to 24.4%, which is within acceptable range of low to intermediate, and intermediate to low gelatinization temperature. The mutants are to be evaluated in multi-location trials targeting possible release as commercial varieties.
