Low cost housing materials and mushrooms from oil palm fronds and empty fruit bunches

Oil palm (Elaseis guineesis) which is primarily grown for oil, is a good source of materials for low cost housing and mushroom production. The oil palm tree produces 24-30 fronds and 10-12 fruit bunches annually. The fronds can be formed into 'kalakat' (weaved oil palm fronds) and plyboard which make good ceilings and walls. Their durability and pretty designs attract a big number of buyers. Empty fruit bunches of oil palm tree, on the other, can be used as substrate for mushroom (Volvariella volvaceae) production. Piling these empty fruit bunches under plantation and spreading them 10-15 days later make a good substrate for the crop. A higher yield and return on investment is attained if salt is applied to the substrate.
