Evaluation of promising potato varieties through microtuber production

The study was conducted mainly to evaluate potato varieties with potential agronomic characteristics and with high utilizable microtubers for reproduction. Eleven varieties were subjected for tuberization in total darkness for one and half months. Results of evaluation showed that Igorota was the most prolific variety producing an average number of 13.5 microtubers per jar while Solibao, Granola and Franze have produced 12.9, 12.7 and 10.3 microtubers, respectively. It was also noted that the earliest to undergo tuberization was Granola at 7 days but with no significant difference with Solibao and Asterix that formed tubers at 8 days after subjecting to total darkness. Yield performance revealed that Solibao obtained the highest mean number of utilizable microtubers producing 909 microtubers with seed diameter ranging from 5mm to 11mm. This is followed by Granola and Igorota with 9.7 and 9.5 utilizable microtubers, respectively. This study further implies that number of days to tuberization influenced the size of microtubers produced. In addition, varieties with early tuber initiation have higher number of utilizable microtubers. Findings from this study showed that promising varieties for microtuber production are Solibao, Igorota, Granola, Raniag, Franze and Columbus. However, further study is recommended to determine maturity index of other varieties evaluated and to improve the size of microtubers produced, hence, increased percentage of utilizable microtubers for reproduction
