Rice grain has been found to possess antioxidant activity as presence of secondary metabolites such as phytic acid, Y-aminobutyric acid, isovitexin, oryzanol, octacosanol, tocopherols and tocotrienols in the rice bran have been reported. In this study, the authors evaluated 313 rice accessions (representing pigmented and non-pigmented rice) and for their antioxidant and anticancer activities. For this purpose, DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging activity assay and MTT(3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium) assay were used. About 10 accessions including Susangjo (pigmented rice) showed high antioxidant activities (100 ugml-1) while 124 accessions including Jaeredo showed low antioxidant activities (1000 ugml-1). Chucheongbyeo used as a check variety also showed low antioxidant activity (1193.04 ugml-1). Aaengmi showed the highest antioxidant activity (8.10 ugml-1) among pigmented rice varieties. Nonetheless Weoljo was at the top amongst non-pigmented (white) with 228.83 ugml-1 antioxidant activity. Likewise, 13 accessions were found to have high anticancer activity in A549 human lung cancer and 54 in B16-F10 mouse melanoma cell lines. Chucheongbyeo (check variety) showed 156.40, 201.67 ugml-1 anticancer activity in A549 human lung cancer and 54 in B16-F10 mouse melanoma cell lines, respectively. Jachina showed the highest anticancer activity (18.96 ugml-1) in A549 cell lines whilst Jakwangdo was at the top for anticancer activity (2.17 ugml-1) in B16-F10 cell lines.
