Response of different wheat varieties to various row spacing

An experiment was conducted at Malakanddher Research Farms, NWFP Agricultural University Peshawar during 2004-05 to study the response of different wheat variety to various row spacing. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with split plot arrangements having four replications. Four varieties of wheat (Fakhr-e-Sarhad, Suleman-96, Haider-2000, Saleem-2000 and Khyber-87) and four rows spacing (30, 40, 50 and 60 cm) were studied during the course of study. Statistical analysis of the data showed that days to emergence, days to maturity, thousand grain weight, number of grains per spike, grain yield and stalk yield was significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05) affected by different row spacing. Similarly, plant height, days to heading, number of grains per spike, grain yield, straw yield and harvest index were significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05) affected by various varieties. The data also revealed significant (P less than or equal to 0.05) effect on grain yield due to interaction between row spacing and varieties. Results indicated that maximum grain yield (3528 kg per ha), number of grains per spike (68) and thousand grain weight (45 g) was recorded in those plots where row spacing was kept at 30 cm. Similarly, minimum grain yield (1891 kg per ha) was noted in 60 cm row spacing.
