Effect of extraction temperature on total fatty acid from Spirulina (Cyanobacteria)

Result from the previous study of the authors indicated that the optimal sample-solvent ratio for lipid extraction from dried Spirulina using ethanol as the extracting solvent was 1:5. In order to obtain more information for the design of the extraction process, this study tried to determine the optimum temperature for lipid extraction from dried Spirulina. Extraction was performed at room temperature (30 deg C) and at 60 deg C. Results showed that at 60 deg C extraction, the content of total fatty acid (TFA) in the extract was approximately 20% higher than at 30 deg C. The time consumed for extraction was also shorter when extraction was done at 60 deg C. When cells were extracted 3 times at 60 deg C, the content of TFA obtained was approximately 85% of total the TFA in the cells, whereas seven times were needed to obtain the same level of TFA when extraction was done at 30 deg C.
