Testing for the bioremediation potential of some microalgal isolates to malathion, an organophosphate pesticide

Organophosphate pesticides are widely used in agriculture because of their cheap cost and broad-spectrum characteristics. However, they are persistent in the environment and have been associated with serious effects on human health. Microalgae can provide a means for the clean-up of these substances in the environment. This study was conducted to test for the bioremediation potential of some microalgal isolates to malathion, an organophosphate pesticide. The effects of malathion on the growth of 4 isolates of cyanobacteria, namely, Chroococcus sp. Naegeli (isolate Bol 33), Synechoccus elongatus (Naegeli) Naegeli (isolate Lin 20P), Synechoccus aquatilis (isolate Sy 01), Hepalosiphon welwitschii West and West (isolate Uprolo 2), and 1 microscopic green alga, Chlorella vulgaris Beijerinck (isolates Makalawang 2) were determined. Growth was measured through cell density and chlorophyll a concentration. The malathion uptake of the isolates for the 30-day period was also measured using a rapid detection field kit. It was found that 250ppb malathion had no significant effect on the growth of all the isolates based on cell density and chlorophyll a concentration measurements. All the isolates were found to decrease the concentration of malathion in the culture to about 10ppb. Results suggest that the isolates were tolerant to the concentration of malathion used.
