Assessment of seaweed resources in Macajalar Bay, Mindanao, Philippines

A bi-monthly assessment using the transect-quadrant technique of Saito and Atobe (1970) was done in six sampling stations in Macajalar Bay from May 2003 to March 2004, namely: Brgy. [village] Hermano, Balingasag (Station 1), Brgy. Jampason, Jasaan (Station 2), Brgy. Bayabas, Cagayan de Oro (Station 3), Brgy. Poblacion, Opon (Station 4), Brgy. Taytay, El Salvador (Station 5), and Brgy. Poblacion, El Salvador (Station 6). The seaweed flora of Macajalar Bay is highly diverse. A total of 91 species were identified and classified into 14 orders, 23 families and 46 genera. Of the total 91 species, 43% was accounted for by Chlorophyta, 36% by Rhodophyta and 21% by Phaeophyta. In terms of species diversity by station, station 4 had most number of seaweed with 22.8% in Macajalar Bay while the lowest figure was obtained in Station 1 with 9.9%. The highest biomass was obtained in Station 3 with 355 g/0.25 sq m equivalent to 1.4 kg/sq m in March 2004, while the lowest was obtained in Station 3 with 5.8 g/0.25 sq m in Nov 2003. The dominant species vary in stations and seasons. Gracilaria edulis was the species found to be common to all stations. Green seaweed was dominated by Enteromorpha intestinalis and Ulva reticulate, particularly in Stations 5 and 6.
