The aim of the present study was to determine photosynthesis rate and chlorophyll level expressed by the SPAD (Soil Plant Analysis Development) index. Measurements were performed on fully developed and intensively growing leaves in the lower, middle and upper position. The greenness index was by almost 50 percent higher in the oldest leaves. The photosynthesis rate of fully developed leaves was only slightly faster, despite a considerably higher concentration of photosynthetic pigment. The results of this experiment show that even significant changes in the greenness index SPAD have no effect on the photosynthesis rate in these organs
