Importance of Azotobacter in production of legume fooder [i.e. fodder] crops in Serbia

The research focused in the application of Azotofiksin (microbial nitrogen fertilizer whose active agent is Rhizobium spp.), and on its effect on the yield and nitrogen content in dry weight of alfalfa, red clover, white clover and goat rue (Galega orientalis Lam.) with aim to reduce applying mineral N fertilizers. The acquired results clearly indicate that a successful production of alfalfa, red and white clover and Galega orientalis requires treatments with Azotofiksin, i.e. that crop-specific, highly active and competitive rhizobia that are not part of the indigenous populations in domestic (Serbian) soils should be incorporated with seeds at the time of sowing. Azotofiksin thus represents a realistic alternative for reducing or fully substituting mineral nitrogen fertilizers in the production of these crops.
