The possibility of a fast and non-destructive estimation of the chemical composition of the soybean seed is one of the most important factors in soybean breeding, soybean seed production, as well as, soybean processing. The near infrared (NIR) spectrum is a small part of the light spectrum and pertains wave lengths between 700 and 2500 nm. These parts of the spectrum contain a large number of absorptions bands, overtones and combined bands, which originate from different organic molecules and provide quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses of the soybean seed. The application of multivariate statistical methods provide quantitative chemical analyses of different classes of organic molecules in the soybean seed. Calibration equations were developed from 220 soybean seed samples. Close relationships between standard analytical methods and NIR values were estimated. The coefficients of determination for the protein and oil contents were 0.97 and 0.93, respectively. The NIR spectroscopy is a rapid, robust and reliable method for quantitative analyses of the protein and oil content in the intact soybean seed.
