In conclusion, the presented data demonstrate the presence of fungi in Norway rats from natural populations. In the light of the importance of emerging and rare opportunistic fungal pathogens, the fungal burden in wild brown rat populations and its characteritics in terms of seasonal and annual changes warrant further investigation.
