New for the Ural area potato cultivars Spiridon and Lazar were compared with cultivars Nevskij, Lugovskoj and Gornouralskij. The researches were hold at the forest steppe zone of South Ural (the Chelyabinsk Region) in 2002-2006. The potato plants were grown at 5-field rotation on leached chernozem at a density of 40 000 and 50 000 plants per 1 ha and at complete fertilizer applying at a dose of 30, 60, 90 120 and 150 kg per ha. Spiridon cultivar had the maximum yield (in the mean 29 300 kg per ha) which was on the 15% higher than the one of Nevskij and Lugovskoj and on the 21% higher than the one of Gornouralskij. The highest solids and starch content in tubers was characteristic for Lazar cultivar (29.1 and 16.3% respectively) and the minimum one was determined for Nevskij cultivar (21.6% and 12.7%). The usage of increasing fertilizer doses provided the yield growth of Spiridon cultivar during 2002-2006 years on 20-68% at a density of 40 000 plants per ha and on 19-76% at the one of 55 000plants. The yield addition of Nevskij cultivar was 20-69 and 18-47% respectively. The dosage raise up to 90 kg per ha had an increasing effect on the solids content (2% for Nevskij and 2.3% for Spiridon) and starch content (3.5% and 3.0% respectively). The follow dosage increasing resulted in the decrease of the mentioned meanings in compare with the 90 dose. The optimal complete fertilizer doses have been considered to be 90 kg per ha (high quality tubers) and 120 kg per ha (maximum yield of acceptable tubers)
