Impact of sugar industry waste water on some vegetable crop production: The case of Kenana Sugar company (KSC)

The study was conducted in White Nile State. It aimed to measure the impact of waste water of sugar industry on certain crops (cucumber-egg plant) and how that is reflected on production, cost and return. Comparison is conducted between area that irrigated from Kenana sugar (Aljanaien) and area (Takaspoun) Irrigated from While Nile River. The primary data were collected using a random sample of 80 respondents (40 Takaspoun 40 Aljanaien) in the White Nile State for the season 2005-2006 using a questionnaire. The study used also secondary data that obtained from official documents, reports and previous theses. The descriptive statistics were used to investigate the socio-conomic characteristics of the respondents. Crop budget analysis was conducted to estimate the production cost and profitability of the crops under the study. The descriptive statistics of socio-economic characteristics of the respondent revealed that 70% and 80% of farmers used waste water and farmers used White Nile respectively, were within the productive age range.70% and 60% received some sort of education in. Aljanaien and Takspoun respectively. The majority farmers were married in the both areas. The analysis of production cost revealed that cost of cucumber and egg plant in the area irrigated from waste water was lower. Productivity of both crops in area irrigated from waste water was higher. Therefore the return from used waste water was higher. The impact of waste water industry had a positive effect. The financial analysis revealed that the net present value of the area under irrigation with waste water and the area under irrigation with fresh water gave a positive value in the case of discount rate of 15%. The financial analysis revealed that the B/C Ratio of the area under irrigation with waste water greater than B/C Ratio of the area under irrigation with fresh water. The study recommended to make maximum benefit of waste water and make more study in this subject by the researcher in the future
