Presence of nitrates in drainage systems in lowlands agricultural soils of Slovakia during the period 2005-2007 was evaluated. On 50 sampling sites the presence of biological nitrification processes releasing soluble and with soil water mobile forms of nitrates was observed. Generally monitoring of drainage water investigates the areas catching surface water extended on 4 600 square km. The observation was focused first of all on draining cannels and local adjustment so-called agricultural watercourses which can serve as main recipient of water draining. The monitoring is realized on the base of so-called Water law No. 364/2004 which in §34 defines vulnerable regions of agriculturally used areas and the direction 91/676/EHS which determines conditions on decrease of water contamination involved by nitrates from agricultural land resources.
