The differences in selected physical and chemical soil properties under grassland, spruce and oak woody plants in the Arboretum Mlyňany were studied. The soil type in the Arboretum was classified as Stagni-Haplic Luvisols. Original vegetation on the studied area was oak-hornbeam forest; therefore the soil under the oak wood was taken as a control variant. The obtained results showed that the type of vegetation distinctly influenced chemical and physical properties of the soil. The most distinctive differences in the soil properties were found between the forest ecosystem and the grassland. Hydrolytic acidity, total organic carbon content, and percentage of organic matter susceptible to decomposition of total soil organic matter (SOM) content differed significantly (P=0.01-0.05). Humic acid to fulvic acid ratio (P=0.01-0.001), soil reaction and percentage microbial biomass of SOM were significantly higher (P lt 0.001) in the soil under the grassland. The soils under the oaks and the spruces did not distinctly differ, however the carbon to nitrogen ratio was significantly higher (P=0.01-0.05) under the oaks, base exchangeable cations (P lt 0.001) and base saturation (P=0.01-0.001) were higher under the spruces. In the grassland, whole soil profile was compacted under the humus-A horizon. Btg horizons in all profiles were strongly compacted with low porosity and high values of bulk density.
